Title Tags Explained

The title tag of a web page is the text that appears in the blue bar at the very top of the page.  Here’s a screenshot of the title tag on our homepage.

If you were to look at the HTML code of this page by going to View ==> Page Source (or View Source) you would see that the title tag code is written as follows:

All the text between <title> and </title> is the title tag.  A web page’s title tag is a very important factor in getting a page to rank for a particular keyword.  Its also important to make sure your title tag is relevant to the contents of the page. If you are unsure about how to go about the job, rope in an SEO agency worth its salt, like the tampa seo. Don’t just throw in popular keywords if they don’t have anything to do with the topic of the page.  Google will view this as spam and penalize your site.  Place your page’s main keyword towards the beginning of your title tag, and keep the length of your title tag around 65 characters.  Another important tip is to make your title tags are different for each page of your website.  Don’t just repeat the same one over and over.  Make it unique to what is on the page.  Not only will this help with your rankings, but it will also help to keep Google from viewing your site as having a lot of duplicate content (a topic for another session).

The title tag is also typically what is displayed when your web page ranks in the search engine results.  Here you can see how our site’s homepage is displayed in the Google results for the search term “used cars for sale”.  Notice how the words from the search term are all highlighted in bold.
